adding images to articles
Over the next few months I will talk you through the extra options we install into our joomla sites which will make your site more usable, giving best practise of course more fun. We try to bring you the best of joomla and do buy license for extras when appropriate to add to our sites.
On all joomla website we install JCE and have a licence to add some great add ons.
I will explain how to add an image with a thumbnail and larger image view.
When you are editing your article place your cursor on the row where you want your image to appear. Click on the insert edit / button as indicated by the red arrow on the graphic.
You will see a pop up window appear, part of it will a Browse section which is where you can add folders and upload images. Its always good practise to create folders to match your pages (sections) and to put images into matching folders. It makes for easier editing by others and yourself. You will see below a graphic in 3 you will see list of folders, to open click on the word next to the folder. Select where you want your folder to appear and press the yellow folder icon under the 1. Name your folder and then OK. To upload images into your folder click on upload icon 2 where an upload window will appear. see graphic below
To upload a photo click on add (4) you can repeat this to add numerous photos.
Options 5 re-size to the size you want, they are locked so only need to change one, defaults to 640
Options 6 select thumbnail size 250 or 150 is good sizes.
7 you can click on the name and you can rename. Name your images with meaning full text which will help with your SEO search engine optimization and give you extra rankings in search engines.
Click on upload 8 and wait for green ticks to appear next to images.
Finally close the window by clicking on close.
The next sep is to click on the Popup tab 9
When you click on click on 9 the following window will appear.
10 Click on the enable box 10
11 Locate image in your folder and click on name. Click yes on use associate thumbnail
12 add a caption with meanful text describing the image. This is the ALT text and will help with your SEO.
13 Click on image tab 13 to take you back to main window.
14 add meaningful text to your alternative text to help aid SEO
15 set your image Alignment from the drop down box. I recommend right
16 Set yourself a margin I recommend 10 if you fill in the top box and click outside or other boxes will populate.
Please note the preview windon 17 which will give you an idea on what it will look like
Finally at the bottom click the insert button and then save or publish your page.
Take a look at your website and click on the small image to see the larger image.
That's it you have now earned yourself a coffee or tea. After you have done this a few time it will become very straightforward and will be worth the effort.
Of course fill free to play around and like all things with joomla its very intuitive and you will see pop up help when you mouse over parts of the editor.
This is one of the sections I cover when teaching joomla on a one to one or group.
Happy joomlaing *smile*
